Edna Scott, the owner of Edna’s Club & Restaurant in Oklahoma City, came up with the lunchbox by accident while trying to make another drink, probably a boilermaker, according to her daughter Tammy Lucas. For such a low-brow cocktail, the instructions are very specific. The beer must be Coors Light, not another light beer. And the glassware must be ice cold. As for the orange juice, no need to squeeze it fresh. Store-bought juice is fine. —Robert Simonson

Ingredients

Yield:1 drink

  • 5 ounces Coors Light

  • 1 shot (about 1 ounce) amaretto

  • Orange juice

Preparation

  1. Step 1

    Place a glass mug, with a shot glass set inside it, in the freezer until ice cold, about 15 minutes.

  2. Step 2

    Fill the frozen shot glass with amaretto, then fill the mug with the beer. Top the drink with a splash of orange juice, about ½ ounce.

I absolutely love this drink! My husband is from just outside OKC, so we’ve gone to Edna’s quite a few times. I’ve never made it myself but would love to try. Only issue is having enough mugs since it is essential for them to be ice cold.

I cannot believe this recipe [and Edna’s] made it to the NYTimes recipes but the lunchbox deserves it. Amaretto and orange juice makes no sense but trust me…it’s delicious.
