Ingredients

Yield:About one quart
  • 1 quart water

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated ginger

  • 1 teaspoon cloves

  • 1 teaspoon hulled cardamom seeds

  • ⅛ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • Thinly sliced orange, for garnish

    Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce to a simmer, add the remaining ingredients and simmer slowly for 20 minutes. Line a strainer with a thin, wet cloth and strain into a pitcher. Refrigerate until cold. Serve over ice, garnished with orange slices.
