Ingredients
1 ½ pounds baby turnips (with their leaves on if possible)
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon sugar
½ cup fresh orange juice
1 tablespoon grated orange peel
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
Preparation
- Step 1
If the turnips come with their leaves, cut them off and set aside. Wash roots and leaves thoroughly.
- Step 2
Saute the turnips in the butter with the sugar until they are lightly colored. Add the orange juice and peel, salt and pepper and cover. Cook 5 to 10 minutes or until the turnips are tender when tested with a fork.
- Step 3
Meanwhile, if you have turnip leaves, slice them and steam them separately. Arrange the turnips in a bowl with the leaves in a circle around the edges and serve.

If you don't have baby turnips, you can dice larger turnips for this dish.
I used honey instead of sugar. Delicious. What a lovely way to enjoy turnips. I think I'll try that with mature 'neeps as well, next time I have 'em.
Quick, easy and delicious, somehow forgot the sugar and used fine slivers of peel, cooked down to almost a syrup, had a very marmalade texture, didn’t miss the sugar - bonus to use the greens, a very pretty side dish.
