Given a choice between traditional fries and sweet potato fries, for me the sweet potatoes always win. With their combination of savory and sweet, these jerk fries, adapted from my book “Sweet Potato Soul Vegan Vibes” (Rodale Books, 2025), are what sweet-potato-fry dreams are made of. They’re messy, colorful, easy to make and bursting with flavor, doused in Jamaican jerk seasoning powder and a sensational mix of scallions, nutmeg, black pepper and thyme. Use an air fryer for the fastest, crispiest fries, but if you prefer, the oven will still give them a yummy crunch (see Tip).

Preparation

  1. Step 1

Heat the air fryer to 375 degrees.

  2. Step 2

In a bowl, toss the sweet potato fries with 1 tablespoon of the oil, the jerk seasoning, garlic  powder, salt and thyme.

  3. Step 3

Spread the sweet potato fries evenly into the basket of the air fryer, leaving a little space between the fries (depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook the fries in batches). Air-fry for 10 to 15 minutes, until crispy and browned on the edges.

  4. Step 4

Meanwhile, in a saucepan, warm the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat. Add the bell pepper, scallion whites, minced garlic, ginger, whole peppercorns and nutmeg and cook, stirring often, for 1 minute. Remove from the heat.

  5. Step 5

When the sweet potatoes are out of the air fryer, transfer them to a serving platter and spoon the sautéed pepper mixture over them.

  6. Step 6

Garnish with the lime zest, cilantro, scallion greens and a generous squeeze of lime juice. Serve immediately.

    Tip
    • To roast in the oven, spread the coated fries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a 375-degree oven until crispy and browned on the edges, about 35 minutes. Make the sautéed peppers as directed. When the fries come out of the oven, plate and garnish as above.

Delicious as-is. Next time I make this, I’ll do a lot more of the scallion/pepper mixture which added a lot of brightness along with the lime. I served topped with some pan fried sausage.

The written recipe is missing the topping described at the 3:36 mark of the video and included in the photo. With that omission, I agree that this is a very fine line between simply seasoning fries and embellishing them to true street-level status.

Is there a cheese that would work on this? Maybe a few seconds under the broiler to melt?

Very tasty, but if you bake them make sure to cut them thinly and do not over-crowd the pan like I did. Sweet potatoes release a lot of steam and will become soggy if placed too close together. Otherwise, seasoning and topping were excellent

Besides being in vogue, what makes these street fries and not just sweet potato fries?

Unless the recipe was changed, step 4 is the topping shown in the video.
