A simple variation on the espresso tonic (that first appeared in 2007 at Koppi Roasters in Helsingborg, Sweden), the coffee tonic relies on a smooth pour of cold brew coffee for its caffeinated topper. Choose a quality dry tonic and, for the prettiest float, add the ice and tonic water to the glass first before gently pouring the brew overtop. If your coffee palate leans sweet, add a splash of simple syrup or maple syrup. If you don’t have limes in the house, no need to run out. Simply swap for a slice or peel of another citrus, such as orange, lemon or grapefruit.

Dry tonic water has more quinine and less sweetness compared to a classic Indian Tonic Water.

At my local coffeehouse, they use a slightly fizzy grapefruit tonic like Pelligrino instead of plain tonic. The combination of tart grapefruit and rich espresso is over-the-top good. Give it a try.

What is dry tonic water?

We loved this for brunch! For those who wanted an alcoholic version, I added mezcal and orange bitters.

As a lover of tonic cocktails, cold brew coffee, and bitter flavors generally - this tastes bad!

What are some brands of dry tonic water? The only tonic water I can find by searching that has "dry" in its name is Canada Dry, which I'm guessing isn't what's recommended.
